Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Affordable Health Insurance for Individuals and Families.

Find comprehensive health coverage that fits your budget. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides subsidies and a variety of plans to help you get the care you need.

Why the ACA is the Right Choice for Your Family

ACA plans offer robust protections and financial assistance, making quality health insurance accessible and secure for everyone.

Financial Assistance is Available

Depending on your income, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly payment, or for cost-sharing reductions that reduce your deductibles and copays.

No More Denials for Pre-Existing Conditions

The ACA guarantees that you cannot be denied coverage or charged a higher premium based on your health status, including for pre-existing conditions.

Essential Health Benefits

All plans sold on the ACA Marketplace must cover 10 essential health benefits, including prescription drugs, mental health services, and maternity care.

The Pre-ACA Health Insurance Market Was a Minefield

Before the Affordable Care Act, finding health insurance could be a nightmare. Without a job or government plan, you faced a system designed to work against you.

Common problems included:

  • Being denied coverage entirely due to a pre-existing condition like asthma or a past heart issue.
  • Being charged exorbitantly high premiums that made insurance unaffordable.
  • Having your coverage retroactively cancelled if an insurer found a small mistake on your application.

The ACA changed all of that, establishing a system where everyone has access to quality, affordable health coverage, regardless of their health history.

Choose the Right Plan for Your Budget and Health Needs

ACA plans are organized into four “metal tiers.” These tiers help you understand how you and your plan will share the costs of care.

Bronze & Silver Plans

These plans have lower monthly premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs when you need care. They are a great choice if you:

  • ✔ Are generally healthy and don't expect to need much medical care.
  • ✔ Want to protect yourself from a major, unexpected medical event.
  • ✔ Qualify for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs), which are only available on Silver plans.

Gold & Platinum Plans

These plans have higher monthly premiums but lower out-of-pocket costs when you get care. They’re best if you:

  • ✔ Have chronic health conditions or expect to use medical services frequently.
  • ✔ Prefer to pay more each month for lower costs at the doctor or hospital.
  • ✔ Want your plan to start covering costs sooner.

Who is eligible to enroll in an ACA plan?
Anyone who is not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or employer-sponsored coverage is generally eligible to enroll in an ACA plan. Subsidies are available for individuals and families with incomes between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level.
What is a Qualifying Life Event?
A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is a major life change that makes you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period outside of Open Enrollment, for example: losing job-based coverage, getting married, or having a baby.
What is a subsidy or tax credit?
A premium tax credit helps lower your monthly premium. It can be paid directly to the insurer to reduce what you pay each month. Eligibility depends on income and household size.
Do ACA plans cover pre-existing conditions?
Yes. The ACA prohibits insurers from denying coverage or charging more because of a pre-existing condition.
